My morning devotions came from Deuteronomy 9. I reflected on when the Israelites built a golden calf when Moses went to the mountain to seek God. I couldn’t help but to think of how we at times build golden calves in our lives. We drift from being in love with God to being in love with other things. Habits, people, achievement, popularity, and possessions can become our golden calves. Moses had the best remedy. He got rid of it. He grounded the calf into dust and threw into the river. It may not be the wisest thing to take a person we have idolized and beat them until they become dust. However, we can get rid of our idolatrous tendencies and give our worship back to God. It may have taken Moses some time to destroy the calf, but it was worth it. Got a calf? Grab the hammer and start pounding. It’s worth it.
